Are you thinking about building your own Langstroth beehive and saving more money? Considered the most popular type of hive around the world, Langstroth hives can be easily built at home. It requires the right type of wood, good materials, proper tools and some woodworking skills for a high quality hive.
In the video below you will learn step-by-step how to build your own beehive and offer your bees the home they deserve. Doing it yourself will give you the biggest satisfaction.
What is the difference between 8 and 10-Frame Langstroth Beehives?
You can choose between 2 sizes of Langstroth beehives: 8-frame and 10-frame.
The 10-frame size comes packed with two more frames of honey or brood space in each box. It weighs heavier than the 8-frame hive which makes it more difficult for beekeepers to lift the boxes. Compared to the 8-frame size, the 10-frame allows fewer boxes to be set up in the apiary. Beekeeping accessories are mostly made for the 10-frame Langstroth beehive while the 8-frame specialized accessories are not that easily found.
The 8-frame size weighs less than its other size which is a great advantage for beekeepers to lift the boxes without getting injured. Also, bees manage their honey supplies more easily in a 8-frame size.
Before you begin setting up your apiary, consider choosing one size and stick to it until you finish building the hive. It is advisable to have all your hives compatible in sizes. Most beekeepers prefer the 8-frame size because it’s easier to carry the weight.
Building your own Langstroth beehive relying only on your efforts will bring you a lot of fulfillment in the end. You don’t need to be a skilled wood professional, just a DIY passionate. After you have designed your own hive, you can bring your bees to settle in.
